Dr. Deborah Hoadley, M.D., M.P.H. & T.M.

Dr. Hoadley comes to us from Springfield, MA, where she is Medical Director for the Baystate Travel Medicine Program.  Her other titles include Assistant Professor of Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, and Baystate Site Project Director.  She is also involved with the New England AIDS Education and Training Center.  Dr. Hoadley received her Medical Degree at McGill University and her Masters in Public Health & Tropical Medicine at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana.  Dr. Hoadley has done many overseas assignments including Medical Directorship for a refugee camp in Thailand and a Medical Coordinator for epidemiologic reporting to the United Nations High Commission on refugees in the Ethiopian border region.  The list of cross cultural and tropical medicine experiences she has, leaves one to be amazed and intrigued.

 

Dr. Stan Houston, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Houston, a founding member of AATHP, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta in the Division of Infectious Diseases, General Internal Medicine, Public Health Sciences, and Medical Microbiology.  He is also an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Zimbabwe and Director of the HIV Outpatient Program for Northern Alberta.  Dr. Houston received his medical Degree from the University of Saskatchewan and his Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, at the University of Liverpool.  He also holds a certificate of Special Competence in Infectious Diseases.  He has been actively involved in numerous research projects focusing on pneumonia, tuberculosis, HIV, & vaccine studies.  As a Medical Consultant for the Travel Health Clinic in Edmonton and the AATHP membership, Dr. Houston is no stranger to us all.

 

Dr. Mark Wise, M.D., D.T.M & H.

Dr. Wise graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1975.  In 1978, he obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, London, England.  Since then he has had a family medical practice in Thornhill, ON and is Director of The Travel Clinic.  He is a Medical Advisor to Voluntary Service Overseas Canada, Right to Play, Canadian Crossroads International, and the Scarborough College IDS.  Dr. Wise frequently lectures for both medical and non-medical groups on subjects related to travel and tropical medicine.  He has received the “Family Doctor of the Year” award in 1998 – from Family Practice Magazine, authored a book: “The Travel Doctor: How To Stay Healthy While You Travel”, and is a radio host for a medical talk show.  He has had opportunities to travel to many interesting parts of the world for both business and pleasure.

 

Dr. Bill Hanlon, MD, BScP, DTM & H.

Dr. Hanlon is a man of many faces and places.  He is a Pharmacist, Family Physician, Travel and Tropical Medicine Consultant, and an Aviation Medicine Examiner.  He has a special interest in adventure travel, high altitude medicine, & international health.  His mountaineering interests have taken him to the summits of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Aconcagua in South America, and Denali in North America.  He is the founder and Medical Director of “Basic health International Foundation” which is set up to help create sustainable, economically viable, local solutions in the area of public health and primary health care to remote high need communities living at high altitude.  He has worked at the CIWEC Travel Clinic in Kathmandu – 2003, taught public health and did clinical work in Tibet.  He has experience with Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal and has had past involvement with the Himalayan Rescue Association.

 

Michelle Munro, RN, MSc

Michelle has extensive experience developing, providing technical assistance for and managing reproductive health, child health and HIV/AID programs in developing countries.  In her current position she provides policy and programming advice to CARE Canada but has in the past worked with CUSO, WUSC, UNICEF, UNFPA and various US based private voluntary organizations.  She has worked in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao, Vietnam, and Papua New Guinea.  Michelle began her career with a nursing diploma from the Royal Alexandra School of Nursing in 1974, and later gained a BSc from the University of Alberta and MSC in Health Promotion from the University of Manchester.

 

Ron Engel

Ron has been a Calgary Police Officer for 25 years.  He has many certifications in scuba diving including Course Director, Royal Life Saving, Emergency First Response Instructor, and Ice Diving.  He has received numerous awards in both Police Service and professional Diving Instruction.  Some of his publications can be seen in Extreme Magazine and Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
